Investigators considering the theft of personal information from 500 million Marriott customers now think the four-year hack was aimed at stealing information, not money. It was reported in Business Insider, that tools used in similar attacks have led investigators to believe that hackers in China instigated the attacks and that they were told to find out information for the country’s espionage campaign rather than to steal money from Marriott customers. Marriott Hotels claim it has no information to share.
The attack resulted in the loss of personal information of 500 million customers, including names, passport numbers, addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and email addresses. Some encrypted credit card data was also taken.
