This ambitious plan to integrate messaging was first reported in the New York Times and is believed to be a personal project of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. It’s thought the Facebook project will be completed by 2020, it would mean that a Facebook user could communicate directly with someone not on Facebook but who does have a WhatsApp or Instagram account.
While all three apps will remain independent, they would need to be linked so messages can travel between them. This raises concerns about how much data would be shared and how this would be used for targeted advertising. More worrying still, it would make it harder to split up Facebook’s suite of apps should regulators deem that this is necessary.
